The Scorer

They sit
On the boundary line
At your local cricket club
Seldom noticed, always there
The scorer

They learned
To score the cricket
Long ago, during the Ashes
They saw the likes of R. Benaud
The scorer

They write
In a strange language
Full of Xs and circles
In the book called CSW
The scorer

They know
How to get rid of
The pesky opening batsman
Who wants to know his tally
The scorer

They watch
And see everything
Every scene that there could be
Even out handled the ball
The scorer

They are
A junior parent
A bowler far past his prime
A patron, a life member
The scorer

So when
You next play cricket
Look out to the boundary line
And smile and say hello to
The scorer
