AFL Pre Finals Top 100 Goal Kickers Washup

End of the home and away season, and the final curtain has come down on only one player so far: the magnificent Matthew Pavlich who kicked poorly, but kicked the one goal he needed to finish on exactly 700 goals and in 22nd place on the all time list.

The final curtain may fall on two more Top 100 goal kickers (Brent Harvey and Drew Petrie) after week one of the finals (North Melbourne plays Adelaide in Adelaide) but if Harvey can snare 3 goals he will equal Sydney’s Michael O’Loughlin in equal 51st position and Petrie with one goal will move past Melbourne’s Russell Robertson and into outright 84th position.

For Nick Riewoldt (St Kilda), Jack Riewoldt (Richmond) and Travis Cloke (Collingwood) the season has also finished, but not their careers as all expect to play on next year, with Travis Cloke likely to continue his career with a new club.  Their current goal kicking positions are #23, #58 and equal #80 (with Billy Brownless) respectively.

Two other players, Eddie Betts (Adelaide) and Josh Kennedy (West Coast) may also only get one more game this year (although it is unlikely) to improve their position: one goal would make Betts equal with Scott Lucas at #64, and 4 goals would make Kennedy equal 71st with Gary Wilson (Fitzroy).

With the luxury of at least 2 games, “Buddy ” Franklin (Sydney) and Steve Johnson (GWS) would both be aiming to climb the ladder higher, although Buddy needs 20 goals to catch #11 (Matthew Richardson) whilst Stevie J needs only one to catch #55 (Bill Hutchinson)!

My prediction that Darren Jarman would be safe in the Number 100 spot at least until next year may prove to be wrong! Tom Hawkins – with a  number of good “bags” recently – also has the luxury of at least two games and needs only 4 goals to equal Jarman (Or 5 to pass him and takeover 100th spot on his own).

On the games played front, Matthew Scarlett would be cursing the fact that both Jarrad McVeigh and Luke Hodge play for teams that made the finals.  Last week they joined him in 100th position and -if they play finals next week- they will depose him from the Top 100!
