Melbourne and North Melbourne are the next two clubs for review. Melbourne had a promising year, and were a slim chance to make the finals until fairly late in the year. North Melbourne managed to make the Final eight, but were bundled out in the elimination final by Adelaide. They would have expected more after compiling a winning streak of 11 wins at the start of the season.
Melbourne finished the year with only 4 current players in the Top 100 game players, and the only representative in the Top 20 was captain Nathan Jones who finished the year in 17th position. The Top 100 goal kickers featured 5 current day players with Jack Watts and Jesse Hogan making the list for the first time in 2016. The bad news in that the highest of these 5 goal kickers was Jack Watts at #58!
North Melbourne, on the other hand had three Top 10 game players who were all not offered new contracts at the end of the year: #1 Brent Harvey, #2 Drew Petrie and #10 Michael Firrito. In addition, there were another 10 current day players who made the Top 100 (including Sam Wright who just snuck in at equal 99th position!)
Amongst the club’s Top 100 goal kickers, current day players were also well represented with a total of 10 making the list. Brent Harvey finished at #2 behind the “King” (Wayne Carey), Drew Petrie was #6 whilst Lindsay Thomas also made it into the Top 20, ending the year in 13th place.
