Who to barrack for this weekend: AFL Stats

We don’t mean which teams, we have picked out the current players in the Top 100 game players and goal kickers list plus one game player and one goal kicker who, if he kicks a goal this weekend will improve his position in his club’s Top 100 goal kicking list.

  • St Kilda v Essendon: AFL Top 100 game players: Nick Riewoldt (St Kilda) will equal Leigh Matthews, Corey Enright and Justin Madden. James Kelly (Essendon) will equal Tim Watson. Brendan Goddard will equal Jimmy Bartel and Shane Crawford. Unless Nick Riewoldt can kick 10 goals, there will be no change in the AFL Top 100 goal kickers tonight! For ESSENDON, David Zaharakis will pass Kevin Walsh and Andrew Welsh in games played and Joe Daniher with just one goal will bring up number 150, pass Ray Watts and join Tommy Jenkins in the Top 40 goal kickers of all time at Essendon. For ST KILDA, Sam Gilbert will equal Bill Mohr for games played, and one goal to Leigh Montagna will see him equal the great Carl Ditterich.
  • Geelong v Hawthorn: AFL Top 100 game players: Luke Hodge will play his 300th game and join a multitude of players on this number. AFL Top 100 goal kickers: Jarryd Roughead (Hawthorn) with one goal, will pass Peter Sumich (WCE). Tom Hawkins (Geelong) needs 3 goals to catch Gary Lyon (Melbourne). At club level, one of the players Luke Hodge will equal is former Hawk, Kelvin Moore and also barrack for Hodge to kick one goal to take him past Nathan Thompson. For Geelong, Andrew Mackie will join current Essendon player as Geelong’s 10th greatest game player, and Joel Sellwood – with one goal will equal Peter Pianto at #52 on Geelong’s goal kicking list.

  • Port Adelaide v North Melbourne: No Top 100 AFL action here, but Andrew Swallow will pass Ian Fairley in games played, and Lindsay Thomas could equal Shannon Grant in goals kicked. For PORT ADELAIDE, Robbie Gray will pass Adam Kingsley’s games total and Brad Ebert could equal Domenic Cassisi’s goal tally.
  • Gold Coast Suns v Collingwood: In games played, Gary Ablett will move further up the AFL Top 100 list, and join Scott Thompson (Adelaide) and Shannon Grant (North Melbourne). If he can also kick 3 goals, he will become a member of the AFL’s Top 100 goal kickers as well! Collingwood have no current representatives in either AFL Top 100 list, but Steele Sidebottom will join Neil Mann and Charlie Pannam at position #53 on Collingwood’s game list, and with one goal Scott Pendlebury will pass Tony Shaw and join Max Richardson at #38 on the club’s goal kicking list. For the Gold Coast Suns, Trent McKenzie will pass Michael Rischitelli and Jack Martin needs one goal to bring up 50 with the club.
  • GWS v Sydney: The “battle of the Bridge” sees Top 100 game players Jarryd McVeigh (Sydney) and Steve Johnson (GWS) in action. In Top 100 goal kicking, both Lance Franklin (Sydney) and Steve Johnson (GWS) feature, but neither is likely to improve their position on the “ladder”.
  • At a club level, Heath Grundy (Sydney) passes Ted Richards and moves into elite territory, equal with Tony Morwood, whilst Lance Franklin can continue his steady climb up the Swans’ goal kicking list by kicking one goal and joining Austin Robertson in 13th position. At Greater Western Sydney, former Collingwood player Heath Shaw will pass current Collingwood player Adam Treloar on the games played list, and one goal will see Josh Kelly pass Will Hoskin-Elliott (also at Collingwood) on the Giant’s goal kicking list!
  • Melbourne v Adelaide Crows: Melbourne has no Top 100 game players to cheer for in this game, as the only two who qualify on the club’s Top 100 list (Nathan Jones and Jack Watts) are both missing with injuries. However two other players join Jones and Watts in the club’s Top 100 goal kickers, and Jeff Garlett needs just one goal to become a Top 70 goal kicker at Melbourne and join Paul Callery and David Williams. For Adelaide, Richard Douglas will pass Nathan Bassett and become the outright 12th greatest game player for the Crows. Rory Sloane needs one goal to bring up his 100 and join Scott Hodges at #28 on the list, and – of course the Crow’s Top 100 AFL goal kicker is Eddie Betts who just needs one goal to pass Brent Harvey.
  •  Richmond v Brisbane Lions: On Sunday, Richmond’s Jack Riewoldt needs 2 goals to catch Michael O’Loughlin (Sydney) in the Top 100 AFL goal kickers of all time. At club level, Brisbane’s Ryan Harwood  will pass Josh Green and equal Mitch Clark. Among the goal kickers, Lewis Taylor will pass Jed Adcock and Daryl White, if he can kick one goal for Brisbane. Shane Edwards at Richmond will move up the club’s games played ladder by passing Matthew Rogers. Dustin Martin regularly kicks goals and one on Sunday will see him equal former captain of the Tigers, Ron Branton.
  •  Carlton v Western Bulldogs. With Matthew Boyd out of the bulldog’s team, Robert Murphy is the only AFL Top 100 player involved in this game, and he will join a big list of players who played 306 games of AFL/VFL football: Wayne Schimmelbusch Gordon Coventry, Adam Simpson, David Neitz, Paul Williams and Alistair Lynch. At a club level, Carlton’s Matthew Kreuser will pass Ken Baxter & Vin Waite and join Charlie Hammond in the club’s Top 70 game players. Bryce Gibbs, with one goal will pass Mick Grace and be an outright Top 60 goal kicker for the Blues. Two of the Western Bulldogs more experienced players will meet mini milestones as well: Dale Morris will pass Scott Wynd’s games total, and if Liam Picken can snare one goal he will pass Ray Huppartz and equal Josh Hill.
  • West Coast Eagles v Fremantle will see 2 AFL Top 100 games players and three Top 100 AFL goal kickers take part, and all will be playing for the West Coast Eagles: Drew Petrie and Sam Mitchell will both make a mark in the games played list after joining the club this year: Petrie will pass Nathan Burke and draw level with Scott West and Paul Salmon., whilst Sam Mitchell will pass Ted Whitten, Stewart Loewe and Tyson Edwards and draw level with Burke. Amongst the goal kickers, Josh Kennedy, Drew Petrie and Mark LeCras will be keen to score enough goals to lift their ratings. At club lever Nick Suban will play game number 150 and join Troy Cook in #17 position. Nat Fyfe with one goal will join Ryan Crowley as the 13th greatest goal kicker in the history of the Dockers.
